A password turns into a key through a one-way transformation: going from password to key is easy, but there's no road back from key to password. What AccessBack.com Does Not Do
So there are no false expectations, here are three things the service doesn't take on:
- It doesn't send you the document's original password. What gets found is the encryption key, not the password. If it's the passphrase you need, that's recovered by search in a separate program.
- It doesn't work with modern Office formats. Only 97-2003, only xls and doc, only a 40-bit key. The service won't take xlsx and docx files: those use strong encryption, and guaranteed table-based decryption doesn't exist for it.
- It doesn't change the document's contents. Nothing is edited — not the data, not the formulas, not the formatting: what arrives is an exact copy of the original file with the protection stripped off.
